Vestige of a Vivacious Vendetta

Alrighty. I’m basing this blog post on one of my personal favorite movies, “V for Vendetta”. It’s not an insanely well known movie, so I’ll try my best to explain the aspects that need explaining for this post to make sense. Also I feel like out of full context a lot of things will seem weird so I apologize. Btw this is about the significance of rain in the movie.

Anyway! Some context for the scene I’ll post below and a short synopsis of what you need to know. The film takes place in a dystonia London in the year 2020, where an authoritarian government has seized control of every aspect of peoples’ lives (very similar feel to “1984” in many ways). The story follows Evey Hammond (aka Natalie Portman, aka the girl in the clip below), a Londoner who is just trying to live a normal life after her entire family disappeared due to being outspoken critics of the new government. After being affiliated with a revolutionary (“V”, shown in the picture above with the Guy Fawkes mask), she herself is kidnapped by the secret police who demand information on the whereabouts of the revolutionary. After stubbornly refusing, she is tortured for days on end until she finally refuses one last time before they said she was to be executed. Except, plot twist, after accepting her death, the guard says “You have no fear left in you. You are free”. She proceeds to walk out of her cell to find that the revolutionary, V, was the one who did all of this to her, not the government.

Rain, throughout all of history, has been a source of purification and growth. In this example, you can even view this scene as a baptism of sorts, with Evey finally burying her old life and beginning a new one from the ashes.

Evey, who has lived her entire life in fear, has finally been freed by V (granted through a very messed up way). He made her realize that when it came down to it, all the government could truly take away was her life, and if she could overcome the fear of her own death then she could have no fear left in her. The rain on the roof symbolizes this transformation, and shows the rebirth of Evey. She had been cleansed of fear, and could now begin a life that she, not the government, was in control of. She cleansed the vendetta she had against the world and came away from the event with something she had never had before: hope.

  1. I always saw the thumbnail for “V for Vendetta” on Netflix, but I never watched simply because it was rated R, and the only things I had heard about it from you or Matthew was that it was a superhero movie. This post has really outlined to me that this film is so much more and that it has a lot to say about society. I really enjoy the point how once one has conquered the fear of death, they have no fear. “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Great post!

  2. I need to watch this! Thank goodness it is on Netflix! How you tied the rain to a whole baptism scene was very well analyzed. They really emphasized the importance of the rain in the movie clip. I agree with Anand’s fear comment. Interesting post!

  3. Okay, now I really want to watch this! The concept seems super interesting. Rain is also such a simple way to add a little depth and is super powerful when coupled with the concept of fear and hope. Also, you have a strong voice in your writing here, and I always struggle so much with that, so kudos to you!

  4. I usually stick to children’s movies and cheesy rom coms, but I enjoyed reading your synopsis of “V for Vendetta.” I love the way that rain is so widely used to symbolize rebirth; I think your example is spot-on. Your analysis and voice really stands out, awesome job!
